Unlike other 4-sided figures, all squares will ALWAYS be similar, since all four sides of each are equal. Since the ration of the sides of two squares is 2:4 or 1:2, the ratio of their areas will be (1/2)^2 = 1:4

The ratio you gave is a linear ratio, 2:4 = 1:2.
The area ratio is always x^2:y^2 when the linear ratio given is x:y.
Therefore the ratio of their areas is 1:4.

One square measures 10" by 10" and the other measures 20" by 20" a ratio of 2:4 being the same as 1:2. Look it as a fraction or division.
For each square calculate L x W...
... 10 x 10 = 100 and 20 x 20 = 400
A ratio of 100 over 400, 400 divide by 100 all answers equal 1:4.
